The Agricultural Enterprise established in 1928 by the brothers Sergio and Sante Delle Monache initially specialized in animal husbandry, in cultivating various kinds of vegetables and, primarily, in growing olives, dedicating particular attention to finding new techniques for olive growing, pruning and fertilizing, also with the collaboration of various experts and research institutes.

The land and the olive trees

Our groves are situated in the heart of the area that belonged to the ancient Etruscan civilization, Tuscia, very close to Vetralla, a little town that has always had strong connections with the culture and traditions of olive-growing and olive oil, located in a central position of the Tuscia Protected Designation of Origin district – TUSCIA P.D.O.

Of volcanic origin, the soil is rich in minerals that are particularly suited to olive-growing, and our groves are positioned on soft hills at an altitude of approximately 280 meters above sea level, with an excellent south-western exposure and an overall extension of 20 hectares. The more than 2,500 olive trees, some of which are more than a hundred years old, are arranged at a distance of at least 6 meters from each other, the perfect space that allows fronds to be aired and to take full advantage of the sunlight. The plants are divided into sectors based on the cultivar (variety of olive tree). This set-up makes it possible to selectively harvest the fruit, ideal for finding a perfect balance for the production of our Extra Virgin Olive Oils. The fruit from our Canino, Frantoio and Leccino olive plants, the most widespread varieties in Tuscia, and from the Moraiolo and Maurino plants, skillfully combined in the right proportions, render an Extra Virgin Olive Oil with a rich and unique taste.

The voice of the Farm

That’s why we believe there

History of the company

The Agricultural Enterprise was founded in 1928 by the brothers Delle Monache, who are dedicated to the growing olives with a special attention to the research of new cultivation techniques.

The Farm stands out for its cutting edge techniques and wins the first national prize in the olive cultivation.

the Ministry of Agriculture chooses our olive groves as the venue for a trial on the methods of planting and fertilizing designed by Luigi Sommaini (Institute of Agricultural Chemistry of Rome), one of the most famous agronomists of the field, acts to increase the amount of production and the quality of extra virgin olive oil. Thanks to the results obtained, known today as “Sommaini Method”, he marked a turning point in the the olive- and tree-growing sector.

The company becomes the exclusive property of Sergio Delle Monache who concentrated efforts particularly on the olive-growing section, continuing research and testing with the purposes of improving the quality of oil produced, among which the continuous collaboration with the Agricultural Inspectorate of Viterbo and other research institutes.

Francesco delle Monache, by then an established geologist who shared his father’s love for the land and for olive groves actively took part in an important research study on olive-growing in the Tuscia territory that lasted 4 years, conducted by ENEA in collaboration with the University of Tuscia, the Cooperativa Energia and the Province of Viterbo, the results of which were presented in a convention held at the University itself and disclosed by Enea in the publication “Technical and Economical Aspects of Olive-growing in the Viterbo Region”, co-authored by Francesco. More than 40 analytical and sensorial parameters of more than 100 samples were compared and the results confirmed that the Vetralla olive oil if produced with special care and attention, is among the best ever.

Having indisputably recognized the quality of the oil from Vetralla and heeding the pressing ecological demands of the time, the new challenge became that of achieving ever-healthier oil capable of fully satisfying its clientele, which consisted of people who were knowledgeable, demanding and desirous of a healthy diet. And so at the end of the nineties, Francesco was one of the first both to undertake the process of conversion into organic production and to become qualified as an olive taster by the National Association of Olive Tasters (O.N.A.O.O).

The “Sergio Delle Monache” Agricultural Enterprise was definitively re-launched, and together with it, all of its heritage consisting of history, passion, tradition, culture, experimentation, biological milestones and products of the highest quality, celebrated by the birth of the Tamìa extra-virgin olive oil, an authentic, homemade and wholesome product: it is extremely rich in polyphenols.

Being present in the most important guides of the sector with great reviews, the Tamia extra virgin olive oils are hoarding of national and international awards, winning, among others, the Award of BEST ORGANIC DELICATE OLIVE OIL IN THE WORLD from NYIOOC – New York International Olive Oil Competition.

Tamìa wins 9 other international prizes, including BEST ORGANIC DELICATE OLIVE OIL IN THE WORLD at Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition. To these are added the prestigious awards related to the packaging: “Le forme dell’Olio” in Milan, “Orii del Lazio” in Rome, “Terraolivo” in Jerusalem and “Innovative Packaging” in Los Angeles, just to name a few.
